It is especially important to understand that a dog who has been rescued, adopted or moved into a new environment does not experience the world in the same way we do. New smells, sounds, cars, other dogs, unfamiliar people and sudden movements can be overwhelming, even when the dog appears calm on the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Very often, a dog does not run away because they are \u201cdisobedient,\u201d but because they are frightened. Fear and panic are instinctive reactions, and in that state, a dog may not be able to respond to commands or find their way safely back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The risk is particularly high for dogs who are still adjusting, because they do not yet know their surroundings, the people around them or their new home well enough to recognize it as a place of safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For this reason, a leash is not a restriction of a dog\u2019s freedom. It is a safety measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just as important as the leash is a suitable harness. Many dogs can slip out of ordinary collars or poorly fitted harnesses, particularly when they become frightened and try to pull backwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The most important feature of a safe harness is that it fits the dog\u2019s body correctly, is not loose, does not slip and cannot easily be escaped through a backward movement. It must be suited to the dog\u2019s build and properly adjusted to provide stability and security during walks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At our organization, every rescued dog is fitted with a secure harness as soon as they leave veterinary hospitalization and move into our care. We use the type of harness we consider most reliable during the adjustment period. For dogs who are frightened, insecure or still becoming accustomed to a new environment, we prioritize safety over the appearance of the equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For us, a harness is not a fashion accessory. It is part of protecting a dog\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The photographs in this article show the type of harness our organization uses and recommends as essential equipment when a dog goes to a new home. We consider this model more secure and reliable because it provides greater control and reduces the risk of a dog slipping out of the equipment during a sudden reaction or moment of fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dogs from our organization often go to their new homes with a harness already provided, precisely because we want them to be protected from the very first day and to give adopters clear guidance on safety measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On social media, we frequently see appeals for dogs who have been rescued or adopted and then gone missing again because of an insufficiently serious approach to walking without a leash or an underestimation of the risks. Some of these dogs wander for days or weeks, become exhausted and find themselves in danger once more\u2014even though they have already been rescued once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We do not rescue animals only for their lives to be put at risk again. For us, adoption does not simply mean leaving our care; it means going to a home where the dog will be protected, handled responsibly and kept safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is through situations like these that people can understand how seriously we approach the safety of animals we rescue and entrust to foster carers or adopters. For us, a leash, a secure harness and clear walking rules are not minor details or an exaggeration. They are part of a responsibility that can directly determine a dog\u2019s safety and survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In certain cases, our organization has had to terminate an adoption and take an animal back into our care because previously established safety rules were not respected.
