Vida and Danka were found beside a bag outside an apartment building, trapped beneath hardened layers of matted fur and suffering from the consequences of years of neglect. Under Ventura’s care, they underwent treatment and a long recovery. Today, they live safely, peacefully and surrounded by love in their own home.

When they were abandoned beside a bag outside an apartment building, they barely resembled dogs anymore.

The two tiny sisters were trapped beneath hardened layers of fur soaked in urine and feces. Their skin was unable to breathe, every touch caused pain, and the overpowering smell of ammonia made it difficult for anyone to approach them. Frightened, exhausted and almost unrecognizable beneath the layers of filth, they stood beside the bag in which someone had left them after years of neglect.

Their bodies bore the marks of a life without care, safety or dignity. Everything about them spoke of prolonged suffering—years spent exposed to pain, filth and complete neglect, without anything resembling the life every animal deserves.

Some of the building’s residents were already threatening to call the municipal animal control service to have them removed.

But one of our adopters, who lived in the building, immediately called us and told us we needed to come urgently. There was no time to wait. We set out to rescue them, knowing we could not leave them there, even though we already had a large number of animals in our care and were not realistically in a position to take on two more demanding cases. Still, leaving them beside that building and exposing them to an even more uncertain fate was never an option.

From the moment they arrived at the veterinary clinic, a painstaking, hours-long effort began to free them from the fur that had been constricting their bodies.

The sound of clippers and scissors broke the silence of the clinic as the veterinary team carefully removed the matted fur, layer by layer. Six hands worked continuously around them. For hours, without a break, everyone worked toward a single goal: to finally bring relief to these two little dogs.

With every layer of fur that was removed, it became clearer how long they had lived in conditions no animal should ever have to endure.

Removing the hardened fur was so painful that they had to be placed under light sedation so the veterinarians could safely free them from the layers of matted hair that had constricted them for years.

Beneath it all, their fragile bodies emerged—thin, curled up and almost impossibly small. Their bones could be felt beneath our fingers, vertebra by vertebra, and their little bodies carried the consequences of years without care, protection or peace.

Then one of the veterinarians quietly said:

“When they wake up, they’ll think they’re in heaven when they feel relief for the first time and realize we’re helping them.”

And indeed, for the first time in who knows how long, they could move and breathe without the weight that had been constricting them for years.

But only then did we begin to discover how serious one of their conditions truly was.

As they slowly recovered from the initial procedures, blood tests and further diagnostic examinations revealed a frightening picture. Inside a body weighing only three kilograms was a bladder stone the size of a quail’s egg.

Such a large stone in such a small dog was evidence of how long she had been living with severe pain, while her body also carried the visible consequences of neglect.

Emergency surgery followed.

The veterinarians managed to save her life. During the procedure, the stone that had caused her enormous pain was removed, and the necessary spay surgery was performed at the same time. She was exhausted, weak and worn down, but alive.

After everything they had been through, the first small signs of recovery slowly began to appear.

They started sleeping more peacefully, eating with an appetite, looking at people without panic and seeking touch and closeness instead of hiding.

Throughout it all, they remained curled up beside one another, as though only together could they believe that the pain was finally beginning to fall behind them. Their bond was extraordinary. After everything they had survived, they were the only source of comfort each other had known.

When the time came to look for a home, we knew that just any home would not be enough for them.

Many people reached out. Their story touched an enormous number of people, but we knew that a moment of emotion was not enough for these two. They needed someone who would understand everything they had been through.

From the very first day, we had promised them that we would find them a safe, peaceful and dignified life.

We knew how much they meant to one another and how precious it would be for them to remain together. At the same time, we were prepared to separate them if that meant a better and safer life for each of them, because their welfare mattered more to us than the image of a “perfect” happy ending.

And then Marijana came along.

A woman who saw not just two little dogs, but the full weight of the lives they had left behind.

Although we had fought for their rescue, treatment and recovery, Marijana became the person who gave them their greatest and most lasting gift: a home and a life they had never known before.

She opened her home to them, but more importantly, she gave them peace, safety and the space to truly begin living for the first time. She adapted her home, her daily routine and her way of life to their needs, fears and pace of recovery. With extraordinary patience and tenderness, she helped them move from a life defined by fear and survival into one in which they could finally relax.

Today, Vida and Danka are no longer the frightened little dogs abandoned beside a bag outside an apartment building.

They sleep peacefully, run through their home, return for cuddles and live a life no longer defined by pain and fear.

Their story will forever remain one of the clearest reminders of why Ventura exists.

Because true rescue does not end the moment an animal is removed from a place of suffering. It continues through every examination, every treatment, every sleepless night, every moment of rebuilding trust and every carefully made decision that gives that animal safety and the life they have always deserved.
